The National Health Service in the UK is on the verge of a "monumental shift toward digital transformation," but funding is a major obstacle, Mizaic CEO Jon Pickering writes in a blog post.
"Like many other NHS-focused tech companies, we are still waiting for the government to align funding to the ambitious objectives they have set for every hospital in the country."
One of those objectives is to "digitize existing paper-based medical records," and Pickering's company is working with the NHS to do just that.
But funding is a major issue, he writes.
"The NHS operates in a cash-constrained economy, making securing the resources necessary for implementing cutting-edge technology increasingly difficult," he writes.
And while there's a "solid economic case for investing in technology for healthcare," the reality is that the government needs to be " judicious in allocating funds," he writes.
One way to do that, he writes, is "to recognize that this promising future hinges on a foundational step that cannot be skipped: digitizing existing paper-based medical records."
One of those steps is to use artificial intelligence "to analyze vast troves of health data with unmatched speed and precision," he writes.
