"The most important people in this room are in these pictures because they have chosen to make a major change in their lives and live a great life."
That's what Mary Ann Furniss, former chair of North Carolina's Trillium Health Resources, had to say about The Healing Place of New Hanover County, a recovery center that opened in early 2023 and houses almost 200 residents focused on their recovery, per a press release.
THPNC's approach includes an emergency overnight shelter, social setting detoxification, and a long-term residential program.
It also provides withdrawal management and a peer-run recovery program.
National rates of recovery vary from 40% to 60%, but graduates from THPNC maintain a recovery rate of 70% one year after completionmaking it more effective than the national average at helping people recover.
"This model encourages accountability and involvement; residents want to be at THPNC and become active members of their community," Furniss says.
Trillium contributed the land used for construction, the county manages maintenance costs, and THPNC is responsible for operational costs.
