Breakaway Syracuse Ballet Company Wins State Grant for New Studio and Rehearsal Space


The state has stepped in to help a new ballet company in Syracuse get off the ground.

The New York State Council of the Arts has awarded Central New York Ballet a $259,000 grant to help it move into 5,000 square feet of space in the historic Gere Block building, which was once home to the Sanford Motor Truck Co., a firetruck manufacturer, and Strathmore Paints, which made paint from 1942 to 2018, Syracuse.com reports.

The company, which formed last year after dancers from the established Syracuse City Ballet broke away, plans to use the space to create its own studios and work space, as well as build a new stage and rehearsal space, the Post-Standard reports.
