Sweden is credited with having the lowest smoking rate in Europe, and a new documentary looks at how the country went about making that happen.
How Sweden Quit Smoking, by Polish filmmaker Tomasz Agencki, includes interviews with health experts, activists, and other stakeholders, per a press release from We Are Innovation, the think tank that organized the screening of the film in Prague, Czech Republic.
Agencki's film looks at how Sweden went from a nicotine-addicted society to a smoke-free one, with products such as e-cigarettes and harm-free tobacco products helping smokers quit, per the press release.
"The Swedish model demonstrates that when smokers have access to diverse, affordable, and appealing alternative nicotine products (ANPs), they are more likely to switch from combustible cigarettes and experience the associated health benefits," says We Are Innovation CEOFederico Fernandez, who is also the producer of the film.
"However, misinformation worldwide about the relative risks of ANPs compared to smoking is widespread, hindering the adoption of these potentially life-saving alternatives."
